Meatballs make a simple, easy, Paleo dinner, but can become a bit boring. This recipe for Sweet & Tangy Spiced Meatballs is anything but boring! The flavors are slightly complex but still very friendly to most taste buds (our kids loved them). I owe my great friend, Jen, for the foundation of this recipe. Jen is an amazing woman who baffles me with her plethora of talents. She is a full-time parent, but I don’t even like to use that term because honestly even parents that work outside of the home are still full-time parents, right! But when I say full-time parent, I mean this lady does everything. She is a leader in our mom’s group and immensely cares about her friends and community. She has been to culinary school, and is an amazing photographer. Jen just has an eye for beauty. Everything she creates whether a floral arrangement, child’s picture, or a new recipe is simply beautiful.
It has been challenging to find like-minded friends in the Midwest. You know, people who truly care about how they treat their bodies. I know that may sound bold, but I’m realizing (after living in the Midwest for 3 plus years) that there are only a limited number of people who really put their money where their mouth is when it comes to health. Jen and her family, like ours, buys organic produce, pastured eggs and grass fed meat…even though it is more expensive. To those on strict Paleo or Primal diets this seems like a no-brainer, but many, many do not know or care to buy the best quality food available. It’s a challenge to find “healthy” food, meaning trips to multiple grocery stores, and lots of recipe searching and creation.
Jen was talking about these ‘quick’ meatballs she made for dinner one night that used ground, toasted hazelnuts, and I thought to myself, Yum…. And, Thanks for an amazing recipe idea nugget. Toasted hazelnuts with some warming spices like cumin, clove and cinnamon came together in my mind and so the recipe for these unique Sweet & Tangy Spiced Meatballs was created. I know cinnamon may sound a little strange in meatballs, but I promise you will enjoy the mix of unique flavors. The ZenSweet Tangy Sauce is also fabulous and really elevates the recipe. A great option to make a complete meal is serving these Spiced Meatballs with cauliflower rice, wilted greens or a big plate of roasted vegetables.
